Picturesque Bluebell Hill Tennis Club is nestled in Bluebell Hill Reserve (previously Harding Street Reserve) in Surrey Hills, 3127.
We are a non-competitive Social Neighbourhood Club designed to suit families of the area who may wish to play regularly or occasionally. The Club is located at the corner of Harding and Erasmus Streets, Surrey Hills. (Melway Ref Map 46, K12). The adjoining park provides good playground facilities for children and has been recently upgraded.
Eligibility for Membership is defined as residents living in the area bounded by Station Street, Maroondah Highway (Whitehorse Road), Union Road and Riversdale Road.
In 1854, John White bought the land bounded by Canterbury Rd, Pembroke St, Shepherd St and Everton Grove from which he quarried rock. In 1868, John Barrett purchased the site with house, orchard and vineyard and known as “Bluebell Hill”. The property was later sold to Louis Smith and converted into a large chicken farm. In the late 19th century, the property was subdivided (The Chicken Farm Estate) and the steep hillside land was eventually gifted to the Box Hill Council. It was left idle for years until the local Baptist Church built 2 tennis courts and a small wooden clubhouse in the area previously known as Harding St Reserve. In the mid 1960's, the Council gifted the land to the Boy Scouts for a large scout hall and car-park but due to local community objections, the land remained as open community space. In the 1990's, with Council approval, local residents took over the club. When the old timber clubhouse accidentally burnt down, the Council assisted with a new clubhouse (current building) and improved landscaping in the park
Bluebell Hill Tennis Club was originally established in the mid 1980’s and incorporated on 17 March, 1989. We currently have a Membership list of around 170 families.
